Challenge

How do you provide container services to customers across globe with diverse geographical and linguistic constraints?

Solution

Star Container is a multilingual platform that allows users to book services of all kinds for their empty containers.

Design Process Overview

Research

We conducted field research, interviewed key stakeholders to gain understanding of Depots, how they function what are the services provided and the geo locations they operate.

"We have to call the depot every time we need services and wait for the open slot" - Adam smith

"Sometimes we miss on deadlines because we have gaps in current manually managed system. Language is a barrier" - Holly

From conclusions of the interviews of stakeholders, there is a requirement of a web application which allows users to book services, connect with depot and use the platform in different languages based on users choice. Which leads to the question...

How Might We...

Build a web application which will serve stakeholders and other end users to book services in the language they prefer?

Ideation Sketches

After establishing my task flow, I started sketching some ideation sketches of what the application could look like when translated digitally. I made multiple versions, shown below is the chosen sketch that I based my wireframes on.

Low Fidelity Wireframes

I then translated my chosen sketch into my first set of low fidelity digital wireframes and conducted my first round of usability testing to test the flow of the app and catch any issues early on.

Visual Identity

Onboarding Wireframes

Conclusions

I really enjoyed this project. I learned how crucial it is to go into the research phase with no biases and no solution in mind. The interviews and secondary research will likely provide insights that were not apparent before, and that is what the solution should be based on.

I have also learned that it is critical to experiment early on, especially during the sketching process, because as you progress in the project, it becomes increasingly more difficult to make changes.

Challenge 😓
How can you streamline tasks and create seamless flight experience for commercial pilots?
Solution 🤩
Skymate, an all-in-one app for pilots, streamlining flight management, document handling, and travel logistics.
Research 🧐
The focus of this research was on key aspects of a pilot’s daily duties, challenges, and preferences.
Below is an outline of relevant findings from existing studies and reports.
  • Time Management: Managing multiple flights within a short period, while also juggling paperwork and briefings, puts a lot of strain on pilots.
  • Stress and Fatigue: Long flight hours, irregular schedules, and managing complex flights can lead to pilot fatigue. Streamlining pre- and post-flight processes helps reduce stress.
  • Technology Integration: Pilots are seeking more efficient ways to manage tasks using technology. Apps that consolidate real-time updates, flight management, and personal logistics are highly valued.
User Story 💁🏻
Who?

am I designing this for
  • This application is designed for commercial pilots.
What?

user expect will happen
  • Check current, past & future flight details, Save & access flight docs.
  • Book stay & transport to desired destinations
Why?

does this impact positively
  • This app will save time by providing flight management, travel & logistics.
  • Pilots can focus on critical tasks and increse efficiency
User Journey 👨🏻✈️
1. Preflight briefing

1. Review weather conditions, airspace restrictions, and NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) to prepare for potential deviations or hazards.

2. Coordinate with the crew to discuss safety protocols, roles, and specific flight details like altitude, route, and expected turbulence.

2. Flight plan & Onboarding

1. Ensure all onboard systems, including navigation, communication, and safety equipment, are functioning correctly.

2. File the flight plan, including routes, altitudes, and fuel requirements, ensuring compliance with aviation regulations.

3. Layover & Logistics

1. Arrange ground transportation, lodging, and meals for the crew, ensuring smooth transitions between flights.

2. Use downtime to review flight performance, address any maintenance needs, and rest adequately for the next leg of the journey.

Insights 📋
  • Pilots are responsible for ensuring that all necessary documents (licenses, flight logs, certifications) are up-to-date and accessible.
  • Pilots face complex logistics for ground transportation and accommodations. Streamlining this enhances their experience, especially on long-haul flights.
  • Long working hours, irregular schedules, and managing complex flights can lead to pilot fatigue. Streamlining pre- and post-flight processes helps reduce stress.
